Parents & Players

Team Florida Current is a non-profit basketball team dedicated to providing an instructional, educational, and fun program for the youth in our community. We have hundreds of girls and boys participating each season, and our success truly depends on the support of our incredible volunteers, including our Board Members, parents, and guardians. The more help we receive, the stronger our league becomes!

How You Can Help: Volunteering with Team Florida Current
Team Florida Current is a volunteer-run organization, and we can’t have a successful season without your involvement.

Team Florida Current Board
We’re always looking for help on our Board. If you have ideas on how we can improve Team Florida Current, your input is incredibly valuable! Stay involved and help us ensure your child has a fun, instructional, and enjoyable experience with us.

Parental Do’s and Don’ts / Safety First!
Please do not drop off your young child at the practice facility. Team Florida Current and our coaches cannot be responsible for every person entering these facilities, and coaches are focused on the team. They can’t leave other players to tend to your child if they need to use the restroom or for any other reason.

Additionally, coaches should not be expected to stay late with a child whose parent has left the facility and hasn’t returned by the end of practice or a game. We understand that unforeseen delays like traffic or accidents can happen, but please don’t place the burden of these delays on our volunteer coaches. In the rare event of an injury, it’s in your child’s best interest to get immediate medical attention rather than waiting for parents to be contacted or to return to the facility.

Let Your Child Enjoy the Game!
We want your child to love playing basketball, and we’re sure you do too! Here’s a great tip to help make sure they do: While at the practice facility, make all your comments positive. Children who hear their parents cheering “Great play!” or “Good try!” will undoubtedly enjoy the game more than those hearing “Why aren’t you running harder?” or “I’m not bringing you here anymore if you don’t do better.”

Keep this in mind on the way home, too. Give them time to relax after the game before offering critiques that might discourage them. Positive reinforcement goes a long way in helping children enjoy the game and continue to play this wonderful sport.

Sportsmanship: A Top Priority
It might sound obvious, but discussing sportsmanship is crucial. We’ve all seen or heard about parents behaving poorly at youth sporting events. Sportsmanship is a very serious topic that needs to be stressed. We expect parents and players to display good sportsmanship at all times.

We expect our parents to lead by example. Your good sportsmanship sets the tone for our kids. At Team Florida Current, we foster a culture where everyone understands three simple facts:

1. The other team is not the enemy. We ask that every parent go to each game with a desire to cheer for both teams. If you see a great move by an opposing player, cheer for it! If you see a great shot, applaud. As adults, it’s up to us to set good examples for our children. Setting a good sportsmanship example will make game days more enjoyable for you, and more importantly, your child will enjoy the game more as well.

2. Respect the referees. Referees will make bad calls; it happens in every sport, even at the professional level. Basketball is fast-paced, and referees have a lot to consider. We believe the best way for them to make accurate calls is to allow them to officiate the game without parental heckling or obstruction. If a bad call is made, the coach – and only the coach – should discuss the matter diplomatically AFTER the game with the referee. The only two words a parent or player should say to a referee are “Thank you.”

3. Let the coaches coach. Remember, our coaches are volunteers. They are not professionals, and they are dedicating their time to work with your child. Please do not question their player substitutions or decisions during the game; they are doing their best. Only address your concerns to a Board Member if you feel your child is not getting the opportunity to play the two uninterrupted quarters per game as our league rules specify. Your team may win or lose, but ultimately, Team Florida Current is focused on providing fun and basketball instruction for our youth, not on determining winners and losers. This philosophy extends to our coaches. Please support them and thank them each week for their efforts.

Other Ways to Create a Pleasant Environment at the Gym:
– Please sit in the designated areas. To prevent confrontations, we don’t permit parents to stroll up and down the sidelines, so please remain seated during games.
Smoking and the use of alcoholic beverages are not permitted at any of our facilities.
